ATI, as prime consultant on a design-build team with PJ Dick, Inc., provided comprehensive A/E design services to the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services for the construction of an approx. 20,000 SF gross area single story pre-engineered building for Maryland Correctional Enterprises to manufacture furniture. The building houses upholstery and re-upholstery plants. Each production area has functional spaces including sewing, upholstery production, fabric cutting, foam cutting, boxing, security storage, caged storage, glue/assembly, administrative offices and rest rooms. The re-upholstery section has additional space for a wood shop.
The building is equipped with an automatic fire suppression system, compressed air drops and centrally monitored security system including CCTV. The main site challenge was to build the portion of the structure on an existing storm drain culvert. The project also included a BOSS building where the inmates are thoroughly screened before and after working in the upholstery plant. Site work included security fencing, gates, security lighting, door controls, and CCTV cameras. The building meets ADA requirements.
