The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Mobile Asphalt Technology Center (MATC) is an 18-wheel tractor-trailer that contains traditional and state-of-the-art asphalt testing equipment set up in a laboratory setting. ATI operates the MATC trailer, a vital mechanism for technology implementation. The MATC trailer enables FHWA to develop policy and technical guidance by identifying regional and national trends in asphalt materials and pavement construction. The MATC introduces emerging technologies into real-world construction, assisting state agencies with positive change, and promoting innovation within the asphalt industry. The MATC trailer is ready, or nearly ready, for widespread use in the highway industry. These innovative technologies and practices can help to encourage agencies to take specifications and practices to the next level to further improve pavement durability.

ATI personnel plan and conduct field visits to paving projects throughout the nation, where we demonstrate the methods and equipment in the trailer. We hold open houses, conferences, and professional meetings at the field sites visited. We answer follow-up requests for advice and information after we return from the field. We also operate an equipment loan program so that agencies can try out the equipment and methods that were demonstrated in the trailer.
