Overview of the project
The purpose of these remedial investigations (RIs) was to characterize the nature and extent of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in soils, sediments, surface water, stormwater, pore water and groundwater. An additional component of these investigations was to evaluate the horizontal/vertical groundwater flow patterns relative to subsurface stratigraphy and off-base migration at four Air National Guard Bases (ANGBs): the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center in Alpena, Michigan; the W.K. Kellogg ANGB in Battle Creek, Michigan; the Capital Airport ANGB at the Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport; and the Peoria ANGB at the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport.

The field research employed a phased approach, with the findings and results of one mobilization guiding the nature and scope of subsequent mobilizations. These Phase I RIs also included the development of a comprehensive Conceptual Site Model which compiled site-specific information collected during the RIs to support recommendations and conclusions. The model results were used to perform site specific human health risk assessment of PFAS; evaluate data gaps, and support recommendations for future tasks.
Result / Impact
This project is ongoing – Collection and analysis of field samples were performed over the course of multiple mobilizations to evaluate the nature, extent and migration of PFAS compounds at these ANGB sites. These field and modelling data are an essential component of larger delineation efforts or remedial actions.
Client Quote
“The project is progressing very nicely given the complexity and changing directions of the new emergent PFAS/PFOA chemicals.”.

“The contractor provided very knowledgeable personnel to perform the field work and prepare the required documents.”
