Overview of the project
ATI performed time critical removal actions at 22 Sites in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, that were burned during the 2020 East Troublesome Wildfire. Required actions included removing building materials, maintenance and cleaning chemicals, batteries, and fluorescent light ballasts that were observed at the Sites during previous investigations, and soil containing contaminants of potential concern including Title 22 metals, dioxins/furans, and asbestos. Remediation efforts include excavation and removal of soil, ash, and building materials followed by confirmation sampling from within the footprint of completed excavations. Additionally, Human Health Risk Assessment, Screening-Level Ecological Risk Assessment, Baseline Ecological Risk Assessment; and waste characterization sampling will be performed. Site restoration will follow the remediation efforts. Based on the remote location and limited accessibility of some of the Sites, containerized impacted soil was air-lifted via helicopter from the excavation location to staging areas to be transferred to truck transport for disposal offsite. During winter work hiatus, ATI performed monthly inspections of installed sediment and erosion controls and security fencing, performing repairs as needed.
Result / Impact
This project is ongoing – The initial round of excavation, sampling, and disposal has been performed. A second round of sampling at several of the Sites is planned for Spring/Summer 2025. ATI personnel will access the remote Sites on foot via hiking trails and containerize excavated materials properly for helicopter transport to the established staging area. For protection of archeological and historical resources, work completed within and/or around the limits of disturbance will be conducted in accordance with the approved Archaeological Resource Protection Act permit. An additional round of confirmation sampling will be performed following excavation to verify removal of impacts that present an unacceptable risk to the applicable receptor groups.
