Overview of the project

ATI, as managing partner of the ATI-Envirosmart JV, provided full design-build services for the repair and stabilization of the failed embankment along the Guest River Gorge (Wise County), VA located in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest, under and IDIQ contract with the National Park Service. The ATI team conducted a stream hydraulic study, applied for and obtained the USACE Joint Permit, completed the embankment repair design, and completed all repair construction work to repair the embankment and adjoining damaged trail sections. The construction of a new bank stabilization structure involved a series of practices including but not limited to vegetation management, the grubbing of the banks, placement of geosynthetic material, placement of aggregate, reinforcing steel and riprap.

Result / Impact

The project was completed on schedule and with no change orders. The team developed a complex, phased construction sequence to meet the client requirement to complete project prior to the busy season for the trail/park as well as overcome restricted/limited access including traversing wooden bridges and narrow trail access with steep embankments on either side. This included a structural analysis of an access bridge to determine its ability to support construction equipment. The team was able to complete construction services and demobilize rapidly to minimize impact to JW&F NF users.
